Douglas Kent
Doug Kent was born and raised in Massachusetts, and began his career as an artist in 1967, when he graduated from the School of the Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, MA.
Although Kent has been influenced by artistic movements such as Surrealism, German Expressionism, and American painting of the 20th century, the artist looks primarily to his own surroundings as a stimulus. The beautiful landscapes of Martha’s Vineyard, where Kent has lived and worked for over 30 years, serve as the major inspiration to the artist. |
Kent’s novel technique of painting often consists of using watercolor and acrylic paints together on surfaces such as wood panels, ironing boards, and wooden bowls, in addition to canvas. This unique approach to the creation of beautiful landscapes has earned Kent’s work a place in exhibitions and collections around the world. Kent has shown his paintings at galleries in Massachusettes, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo; his pieces hang in collections as far-reaching as Singapore, Japan, Australia, Europe and Latin America.
Kent describes his own work as an interest in and dedication to the process of painting rather than just a concentration on the subject of the painting. In the artist’s own words: “The subject is a vehicle to be transformed in the act of painting.” The resultant images seen in Doug Kent’s paintings are remarkable and interesting landscapes that reflect on the artist’s own experiences with the nature of Martha’s Vineyard. |
