The Crossroads of Miró and Calder

William Bennett Gallery is pleased to present The Crossroads of Miró and Calder at their midtown exhibition space, in collaboration with Patrick Melville Salon and Spa.

Somewhere at the crossroads of physics and poetry—someplace between the real and the imagined—Joan Miró (1893-1983) and Alexander Calder (1898-1976) intersect. From their first meeting in 1928 until the time of Calder’s death in 1976, Joan Miró and Alexander Calder developed a lifelong friendship and exchange of ideas that served to inspire and influence each other’s oeuvres. Calder found his place in the canon of art history on the fringe of the traditional nomenclatures used to describe modern artists, whereas Miró is traditionally affiliated with Surrealism. Miró and Calder sought to move away from illusionism and figurative formalism and in turn, both artists straddled the border between Surrealism and abstraction.
